Wimbledon champion Simona Halep is reportedly getting divorced from her billionaire husband, Romanian business tycoon Toni Iuruc, less than a year after they tied the knot.
Iuruc confirmed the split, telling Romanian reporters that it was a mutual decision, according to news.com.au. They would have celebrated their first wedding anniversary on Sept. 15.
“We decided together with Simona to break up,” Iuruc said. “Stop insisting, it’s my last public appearance … The rest will be handled by the lawyers in the most civilized way possible. Thank you for understanding.”
The divorce news came after Halep’s shocking first-round exit at this year’s US Open in Flushing Meadows.
Halep, 30 — the former world No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam winner — fell to 124th-ranked Ukrainian qualifier Daria Snigur in three sets on Aug. 29. The Romanian tennis player entered the tournament after winning the WTA 1000 event in Toronto.
In 2019, Halep gushed over her love for Iuruc, and how it complicated her tennis career.
“Now I am more relaxed and open. I have a dear person,” Halep said in an interview with TVR1. “We have a normal relationship, I feel very well. But I would like it to stay personal. I belong to Romania when it’s about tennis.
“Love and tennis can coincide, but I think personal life is the most important one. I am dating someone and I would never be able to sacrifice my family for tennis.”
Iuruc, who is Macedonian, was reportedly married twice before he began dating Halep in 2018. Prior to her relationship with Iuruc, Halep dated former tennis player Radu Barbu.
Halep is still in contention to compete at the 2022 WTA Finals, which will take place in Fort Worth, Texas at the end of October.
